Position Description

 GPs at headspace Newcastle GP provide youth friendly, general medical and mental health focussed assessment, planning, and reviewing, with attention paid to the holistic health care needs of headspace clients. Clients are aged 12-25 so working with family members / parents will often be required. The role involves working as part of a client-focussed, multidisciplinary team.

 We currently have vacancies 1-3 days per week. Session times are generally 9am – 1pm, & 1:30pm – 5:30pm, Mon- Fri.

 

Essentials Description

  

  • Qualification as a current "Medical Specialist - General Practitioner" recognised by the Medical Board of Australia and be fully registered as a medical practitioner and hold the specialist title - General Practice with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.
  • Eligible for the provision of a Medicare Provider Number, with additional qualification in Mental Health Skills as provided by The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, and eligibility to bill MBS accordingly. Applicants who intend to get this qualification immediately may apply.

  • A demonstrated understanding of the key issues that impact on young people aged 12-25 years, including health, mental health and psycho-social issues, and enthusiasm for promoting the mental health and emotional well-being of youth.

  • Commitment to participating in, and delivering, on-going training and development specific to the role at headspace Newcastle.

  • Commitment to clinical governance, quality improvement and risk management.

  • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills
  • A clear working with children check is required prior to offer of employment and at all times during employment
  • A national police check for working with vulnerable people is required prior to offer of employment and each 3-years thereafter while working at headspace Newcastle.

 

Desirables Description
    • Understanding of early intervention models, as well as brief intervention and discharge planning, that aims to promote autonomy and resilience.
    • Demonstrated experience in working with complex, family and carer situations including high level understanding of inter-familial confidentiality issues.

    • Demonstrated ability to engage with, and maintain effective relationships with a diverse range of young people and their families / carers.

    • Experience and flexibility in learning and adapting to new systems.

    • Demonstrated capacity to work autonomously, while being part of a team

    • Able to use initiative to identify areas for improvement and implement changes.

    • Awareness of the Youth and Mental Health sectors in Newcastle and surrounding areas.

Description of Facilities

headspace Newcastle is an early intervention service providing a range of primary health and mental health, substance use, social welfare and vocational services for young people aged 12-25 . We are located in Hunter St, Newcastle. Our vision is to be a leader in enhancing and promoting the mental health, wellbeing and social inclusion of young people in the Hunter region. We have a fully functional GP clinic facility, that is well utilised by clients. We have dedicated reception / administration staff who are competent in MBS billing and all aspects of client administration. We use Best Practice software. The service has a 'one-stop shop' philosophy, and is staffed by a multidisciplinary team including psychologists, psychiatrist, social workers, employment consultants, relationship counsellors, youth workers. Our lead agency is Hunter Primary Care, and therefore our service has excellent understanding of GP needs, working closely with GPs from across the Hunter region.
